Facèré: good enough to eat statement

Exhibition Statement:

Some things—because of their taste or because they are nourishing—are good enough to be eaten. Some things—because they have mouths—have evolved to be good enough to eat other things.

For this show, I have crafted jewelry that plays with this dichotomy. Each sculpted, natural form delights the eye (and looks “good enough to eat”) and is inspired by carnivorous plants (which seduce and eat unwitting prey with their graceful fingers and alluring mouths).

Most often we conceive of plants either as food or as ornamental,--as purely passive creatures to be used as we see fit. My pieces aim to destabilize our preconceptions and appeal to our aesthetic appetite.

cephalopods, in GIA exhibition

I explore concepts of adornment using adaptive biological forms.

These two pieces belong to my Cephalopod series. The Cephalopod class includes the octopus, the squid, the nautilus, and other predatory mollusks.

The larger piece alludes to the grace and versatility of the octopus, inverting our preconceptions about the table as a platform for art that adorns the home. As we are arrested more by the beauty of the octopus than by its remarkable perceptual capacities, so we are impressed more by the elegantly curved legs of the tripod tray-table than by its many functions. Just as members of the genus Octopi need three hearts to survive, a table needs at least three legs to stand, but these functional requirements are eclipsed by our aesthetic response to the alluring forms.

The smaller piece alludes to the contractile tentacles of the squid, considering the gold diamond engagement ring as a symbol of captivity. As diamonds irresistibly attract our attention, so the suction cups lining the tentacles inescapably grip the squid’s prey. As lustrous gold is both soft and durable, so the muscular tentacles are both viscous and crushing

Sculpture+Jewelry show @CFA La Jolla

I explore concepts of adornment using adaptive biological forms.
These two pieces belong to my Echinoderm series. The Echinoderm phylum includes all 5-sided ocean organisms, such as sea-urchins and starfish.The larger piece contemplates the corset as sculpting the female body, alluding to Cnidarian forms (Cnidaria are carnivorous Echinoderms such as the jellyfish and the sea anemone).
The smaller piece considers the Swedish bridal crown as an extinct form of culture, alluding to the form of extinct Sea Lily (or Cladida, a group of the Crinoid Echinoderms, all of which were passive feeders).
