Alexandra Hart ALL ABOUT FORM
by Jill A. DeDominicis
Standing or resting on the table in her San Diego studio, Alexandra Hart’s metal creations look more like undersea creatures or species from some futuristic terrarium than wearable jewelry. Her mostly gold, bi-metal and sterling silver pieces twist, writhe and unfurl, and are “all about form.” Examining each one, holding them and allowing one’s fingers to sweep over the bumps, spikes and curves, the viewer is left with an indirect notion of the intricate forms of nature. For centuries nature has been muse to artists the world over, to those who hope to invoke its boundless beauty through their modest hands and materials. Of course, beauty in nature is easy to find—in the bright colors of a bird’s feathers, the geometric patterns of a beetle’s markings, the sensuous forms of an orchid. But perhaps our fascination with nature, and the very reason it remains an undying source of inspiration, is not simply its endless splendor, but its deeper paradox of beauty and danger. Photographs by Ralph Gabriner and Robert Weldon.

cephalopods, in GIA exhibition
I explore concepts of adornment using adaptive biological forms.
These two pieces belong to my Cephalopod series. The Cephalopod class includes the octopus, the squid, the nautilus, and other predatory mollusks.
The larger piece alludes to the grace and versatility of the octopus, inverting our preconceptions about the table as a platform for art that adorns the home. As we are arrested more by the beauty of the octopus than by its remarkable perceptual capacities, so we are impressed more by the elegantly curved legs of the tripod tray-table than by its many functions. Just as members of the genus Octopi need three hearts to survive, a table needs at least three legs to stand, but these functional requirements are eclipsed by our aesthetic response to the alluring forms.
The smaller piece alludes to the contractile tentacles of the squid, considering the gold diamond engagement ring as a symbol of captivity. As diamonds irresistibly attract our attention, so the suction cups lining the tentacles inescapably grip the squid’s prey. As lustrous gold is both soft and durable, so the muscular tentacles are both viscous and crushing

Sculpture+Jewelry show @CFA La Jolla
I explore concepts of adornment using adaptive biological forms.
These two pieces belong to my Echinoderm series. The Echinoderm phylum includes all 5-sided ocean organisms, such as sea-urchins and starfish. The larger piece contemplates the corset as sculpting the female body, alluding to Cnidarian forms (Cnidaria are carnivorous Echinoderms such as the jellyfish and the sea anemone).
The smaller piece considers the Swedish bridal crown as an extinct form of culture, alluding to the form of extinct Sea Lily (or Cladida, a group of the Crinoid Echinoderms, all of which were passive feeders).
Please join me at the opening of one of the first San Diego county wide LITTLE AND LARGE, JEWELRY AND SCULPTURE EXHIBITIONS: inspired by the Calder Jewelry exhibition coming to the San Diego Museum of Art.
