Exhibition Statement:
Some things—because of their taste or because they are nourishing—are good enough to be eaten. Some things—because they have mouths—have evolved to be good enough to eat other things.
For this show, I have crafted jewelry that plays with this dichotomy. Each sculpted, natural form delights the eye (and looks “good enough to eat”) and is inspired by carnivorous plants (which seduce and eat unwitting prey with their graceful fingers and alluring mouths).
Most often we conceive of plants either as food or as ornamental,--as purely passive creatures to be used as we see fit. My pieces aim to destabilize our preconceptions and appeal to our aesthetic appetite.
